Who We ArePro-Life Berks began in 1998 when Reading Planned Parenthood started to do abortions. Basil Floriani, (RIP), and Kathy Kuhns approached then Bishop Edward Cullen,of the Diocese of Allentown, to ask if we could form a pro-life group and he encouraged us to move forward. Fr. Aram Berard, S.J., (RIP), Assistant Pastor of St. Paul R.C. Church,Reading, PA, former director of pro-life activities for the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas, and former POW in Vietnam, who encouraged us from the beginning became our Spiritual Director. With Father Berard and several other pro-life activists, we began Pro-Life Berks. Soon after we organized, we began a pro-life newsletter and then a bi-monthly television program on Berks Community Televsion. In addition, we maintain our weekly presence at Reading Planned Parenthood, especially on abortion days where we pray, where we offer literature and counsel abortion-minded women to not seek abortions, and direct them to a crisis pregnancy center and/or to other resources they might need. Our mission is to articulate moral and ethical human life issues that are not adequately discussed and to encourage dialogue on these vital issues. We believe that life begins at conception and ends at natural death. We also follow the teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Pro-Life Berks participates in the national 40 Days for Life Campaign and Prayer Vigil, which began in 2007; and this year, Fall, 2010, will be our sixth campaign and vigil at Reading Planned Parenthood. We also support the annual Life Chain and periodically participate in organizing local Truth Tours, where graphic signs are held along local highways to show the truth about abortion. Pro-Life Berks is also a member of the Pro-Life Coalition of PA. Pro-Life Berks asks that all who participate in any pro-life activities of ours, or others, do so in a peaceful and prayerful way. We strongly oppose the use of force and violence, in any way, against abortion providers. Rather, we believe we can change hearts and minds through prayer, witness, education and dialogue. Pro-Life Berks greatly appreciates all the wonderful pro-life witnesses who have, over the years, been willing to stand and pray for the end of abortion. We also greatly appreciate the many faithful pro-lifers who have supported us with their ongoing prayers and finances. Please continue to pray for the end of abortion in our country and especially in Berks County. Please contact us if you would like more infomation and/or would like to become a volunteer.
Disclaimer: Pro-Life Berks has never advocated the use of force or violence, in any way, against abortionists or anyone who works in the abortion industry. There was a gentleman in our early years who wrote of the use of violence in our newsletter. His few articles were allowed for discussion purposes only, and then he was denounced by Pro-Life Berks.
